Explore Bogen Straubing-Bogen Region Lower Bavaria Germany, Tourism, Travel Guide
The medieval town of Bogen is one of the gates to the Bavarian Forest nicely located on the river Danube.
It is topped by a pilgrimage church (Wallfahrtskirche Sankt Maria Himmelfahrt) which is located on the "Bogenberg".
The history of the pilgrimage can be traced back to the year 1104 (Wikipedia).
Bogen has a population of about 10 000. We did not see any pilgrims during our brief visit but many bikers (on bicycles) which followed the Danube.
Please be prepared to walk because I don't think pilgrims are allowed to come in a car.
Bogen at the banks of the Danube
Please be prepared to walk because pilgrims are allowed to come in a car. If you need to recover, you will find a restaurant on the "Bogenberg" which allows you to enjoy the scenery from the attached patio.

Naturally Bogen offers more than just churches and museums. Walking and biking trails and all kind of sportive activities are offered.
We were told that the museum on the "Bogenberg" would be very interesting but it was pretty early and we wanted to travel more on this beautiful day. (We were most the time lucky with the weather!)
However, we visited only the pilgrimage church and on our way back to the town we had lunch

Better than walking!
Elizabeth loves all animals but she is afraid of horses. I do not know why and she could not explain it either. She is just afraid of them without any specific reason.
The two pretty smiling ladies obviously love horseback riding.
On Lake Erie in Ontario I could take my own pictures also of smiling ladies on horses - just browse through our English travel guide for our province. You will find them in a site for a tour along Lake Erie.
I got this picture from the "Tourist Board of Bavaria" and we did not see anybody in or around Bogen on horses. But horseback riding is popular in Germany and naturally also in Bavaria.
I never did it but as child when we lived in Upper Franconia I had along ride on the back of a cow but without a saddle or any additional protection of an essential part of my body.
After this painful experience I preferred walking.
If you are interested in any sports contact the tourist office of Bogen. We cannot help you!
Many thanks for dome of the pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
