We had friends in Bad Birnbach. We liked to visit them and had always such an enjoyable time that we never had time to visit the "Rottal Therme" a spa.
Everything was prepared and programmed so nicely that it would have broken their heart if we would have left them.
We should have added another day and booked a room but both of had to be back for work.
Elizabeth would certainly have exercised for hours in the 38ºC (100ºF) warm water to "lose" weight and to strengthen her muscles.
I am not sure wether we would have booked an accommodation in one of the luxury hotels which have their own spas and where Elizabeth probably would have loved to try some of the offered treatments.
I decided not to do any more free advertisement but the video to which I have installed at the end of this site shows also something from Bad Birnbach.
We were surprised that this relative small village of only 5500 residents offered not only such a spa but also a golf course and a really great variety of places to stay. Some of them for very reasonable prices.
Our hosts told us that the hot water was discovered around 1939 when an oil company was searching for oil. In the seventies it was decided to dig again and use the thermal spring for tourism.

The "Pfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt" - many thanks to "Konrad Lackerbeck" and Wikipedia
This church was originally erected in 1483 and rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire in 1675. The tower was added around 1828. (thanks to Wikipedia)
We did not visit this church. Normally Elizabeth used every chance to enter churches and also cemeteries with old grave stones attracted her. I had to do very often the translations. This was very often a major part of our sightseeing.
We never saw our friends in Bad Birnbach again nor did we have an opportunity to visit many spas in Bavaria. We did this later in Thuringia and twice in Lower Franconia.
I wish owners of "spas" in our area of Ontario would go on a business trip to learn how a real spa looks like. A few warm keystones are not enough. The same applies for beer gardens and also foe Oktoberfest. What about a small tax credit to improve tourism in Southern Ontario? So much money is already being wasted why not spend money for mandatory education? I offer my services as high paid consultant because that is the way how it is done here.
Eventually the following video will convince you that holidays can also be used to refurbish you body and having fun by doing this!
Many thanks for some of the pictures to the Tourist Board of Bavaria and involved communities
