Bad Berka is a lovely little town in the Weimar region of Thuringia. I found a nice accommodation in nearby Kranichfeld and decided to stay there for two nights to explore also the surroundings and to work on our tourist guide.
It was very hot in June and the borrowed older Audi from my son did not have air condition. Please consider this when renting a car!

Please follow always the signs "Altstadt" whenever you come into a city. "Altstadt" guides you to the old downtown. If you do not so you miss everything interesting!
I found parking close to downtown. Unfortunately the allowed parking time was very limited and I had to rush. Don't make the same mistake.
We recommend that you first visit the "Kurverwaltung" where you can collect some information about the attractions of Bad Berka.
I am not a fanatic in following all the steps of famous people of the past. But for those who are Thuringia offers a great deal. Bad Berka for example is very proud that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had spent some time here.

You see it was early in the morning. I could not see anybody in the restaurants. The real "continental breakfast" which I had enjoyed in the B & B in Kranichfeld made it also easy for me to proceed with my tour and not to stop.

Bad Berka

The village was mentioned the first time in 1119 which means it had along time to grow.
It was a pleasure to walk through the old town. I only saw a few local people but no tourists. Most of the houses had been renovated. I am always amazed what has been achieved since the reunification of Germany. The majority of East and West Germans accept this, but a few wish the old times back, similar to Russia. What can you do against that stupidity?
Bad Berka does not have a wellness center with spa. However they offer treatments against digestion problems by drinking water from a special well. (Goethebrunnen) Please ask for detailed information at the "Kurzentrum".
