A visit to the Bachhaus in Eisenach Thuringia, Germany, Tourism, Travel Guide
Thuringia praises itself always as the green lung or the green heart from Germany.
I believe that especially for visitors from overseas the abundance of history and culture is a reason to come to this state. In addition the great nature will give you a chance to unwind a relax between all the sightseeing and joining events.
Eisenach, a medieval town, and its surroundings are a place where you can spend days in doing all this.
Elizabeth my wife and I had visited the Bachhaus the first time in the early nineties. We liked it so much that we returned an decade later.
The Bachhaus in Eisenach, Thuringia
She is still talking about it. In the meantime major changes and renovations has been done.
The house is dedicated to world famous Johann Sebastian Bach. It was established in 1906.
Badly damaged during WWII
Grand opening after the renovation - many thanks to Wikipedia
As you can see below the house was badly damaged during WWII. When you visit it today, you will not see anything of that any more.
Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach and members of his family lived in this house in earlier days.
The house is also a museum for historical instruments and the great attraction is that you listen to them during demonstrations. Unfortunately with my old camera I could not take video clips.
Guided tours in English language are provided, but we recommend that you contact the museum in advance. You do not want to travel thousands of kilometers and become disappointed. You will find many information about the Bach family. Naturally, everything in German. Please ask if you need any explanations.
You can see authentic furnishing of the time around 1700 when Bach lived.
Elizabeth tried to furnish our house in a similar style. However, she would not like to miss the TV and all the utensils which make housework easier. But I believe that the richer people in the past had all housekeepers and staff who took care of all the things which we have to do today by ourselves.
Don't forget to have a view from the windows on the town.
Ask for upcoming events in this historical place. You do not want to miss something only because you forgot to get the necessary information.
We do not want to replace an actual visit of the "Bachhaus" with our web site. We only want to give you an impression what to expect.
If you want to learn more about the life of Johann Sebastian Bach you will certainly find many information. We recommend that you join a guided tour in the English language if you can't read all the German explanations. Please call ahead to make sure that such a tour is available when you come.
Spend some time studying the collection of old instruments and experience their sound during a demonstration.
One organ needs a helper who has continuously to pull out a belt to make the instrument work.
Demonstration of antique instruments
Naturally, for the following performance a volunteer from the audience was needed.
A visit to the "Bachhaus" certainly will refresh and improve you knowledge about this multi talent musician.
These demonstrations of old instruments were the highlight of our visit. Don't miss to browse through the gift store. Maybe, you want to take home a book or some CD's with this wonderful music.
If you are interested in a concert - please ask. They are performed on request for larger groups, but eventually their is a chance to join. Just ask. Don't miss such a chance!
Many books printed hundreds of years ago are displayed.
The signature of Johann Sebastian Bach
There are so many things to discover, so please plan some time for the visit. If you want to take pictures, please ask. A small fee may have to be paid to be granted this favor. Every museums needs financial support.
