We mainly visited Augsburg.
Something for everybody's taste is offered in the area surrounding this city. Whether you want to join festivities (ask for dates), do some sightseeing or join on a cultural trip - you will not be disappointed. But don't expect mountains!

Especially, the churches are an attraction for many visitors - especially when they are Catholics.
Many churches display for Christmas nativity scenes.
This stated early and was done to fight the reformation.
Many families even had them in their houses. People visited each other around Christmas to compare them. I observed similar behavior in Canada with Christmas lights.
They are even having contests here.

In certain areas "Fasting Sunday" (I think it is the first Sunday of the 40 days of fasting)) is still celebrated with fires.
Occasionally a Judas made out of straw is burned or a witch. I am not sure whether I like that and I would not participate in such an event.
It reminds me about all the terrible things which were done in the name of Christ. Not too different from what the Talibans are doing today.
