Arnstadt is small town in the Ilmkreis region of Thuringia with a history of over 2300 years. I never questioned to make it a part of our little travel guide.
As usual I parked my little yellow car outside of the town center and walked which was really painful with my injured knee. I was feeling like an old man and I was happy that no old lady with a walker was passing me.
Note: They have walkers in Thuringia but instead of scooters for handicapped people they often use little cars which are limited to a maximum speed of 25 km/h!. Much more comfort - especially in winter and you can take your dog and your wheel chair with you!

The ruins of castle Neideck

This landmark was first mentioned in 1273. Unfortunately, in 1770 most of this castle was scrapped and now lots of work is needed to rescue the remaining part.
With an unemployment rate of about 20% today in this area nobody should complain about the destruction as long as the renovation is done by local people. I only hope that this landmark will accessible to the public in the near future.
Because I was getting hungry after a relatively long drive in the bumpy little Opel car I proceeded to downtown hoping for a good Thuringian lunch for a reasonable price - and naturally a beer and a coffee after.

Cute little kids screamed some kind of hello to me

I learned very fast that every Tuesday a big market is held in Arnstadt. Vendors from all over the area are coming to offer all kind of merchandise during this event.

A market is always a good opportunity to meet friends

The complete downtown area has been reserved for pedestrians. Only delivery vehicles are allowed. I believe this is a great idea and I do not understand that this concept did not spread to Canada.

The PDS (a socialist party is collecting signatures. As you can see the Bratwurst is much more popular!

I was in need of a real meal and I discovered a nice looking restaurant which offered a variety of Thuringian food - even during the week. Unfortunately, this is not always the case - but I hope this will change with increasing tourism.

Market in Arnstadt

I was one of the first guests and took a seat at the window to watch the market scenery and the shoppers. Normally, you can select the place where you want to sit and must not wait to be seated. It is also normal that other people will share with you the table.
Unfortunately, smoking was still allowed everywhere. I wished the "Green Party" would introduce a clean air act in public places instead of creating continuously new taxes and fees to rip off people and business!
I ordered again duck with dumplings and red cabbage. It was delicious.

To loose some of the gained calories, I walked through medieval Arnstadt. My special attention found the old city hall (Rathaus) which was built between 1583 and 1585 but I was not able to take a good picture because of all the stands and delivery vehicles on the market.
If you arrive on a Sunday or a German holiday in Arnstadt you may be interested to visit the "Eisenbahnmuseum" (railway museum) where many steam locomotives are displayed.
Check for events. Johann Sebastian Bach played as a young man the organ in a church and today this famous composer is still honored in local concerts.
