A visit to the "Erlebnispark Meeres-Aquarium" (aquarium) in Zella-Mehlis, Thuringia
Part 2
Certainly you will ask now: Where are the killer whales, the dolphins, the sea lions etc.? What kind of shows are offered? I think most of the animals will never be displayed in this aquarium. Many Germans would not appreciate that at all, after watching "Free Willy", and as children "Flipper". Germans are much more concerned about the environment and protecting nature and wildlife than others. They are not against high tech, because Germany is an industry nation and advanced techniques can be used to protect the environment if the standards are set accordingly. High tech also helps to make business.
I did not see any events announced during my visit, but I was toll that the daily feeding of the sharks always draws many people.
I hope that the "Erlebnispark Meeres-Aquarium" keeps it proven concept and never becomes something like an amusement park with roller coasters etc.
I always liked diving. I did this whenever I had a chance, but I never professional. I only used a diving mask and a snorkel. I also loved to see films on TV when they were related to the underwater world.
After my visit I am convinced that I missed my chances to learn and practice diving as a hobby when I was young. I was fascinated by the colors of the maritime life.
Time went fast and suddenly we had more and more people around us. I did not recognize a single foreigner. Many visitors took pictures.
If I have a chance to come back I would like to see a little bit behind the scene of this unusual attraction in the Thuringian Forest. How do they get the sea water? How do they keep it clean and healthy? What do they do in case of a power failure? What is the life span of the fish? How do they get them? What are the plans for the future?
It is always advisable to visit interesting places at least twice. You always miss something during the first time and when you are back and sort and view all the pictures you took, normally questions come up. This happened to me with many places.
Have you ever considered to have your own aquarium at home? We visited friends and they had several of them. They told me that watching them is much more relaxing than watching TV. I believe that.
I was surprised when I saw the sign "Krokodilhaus" (crocodile house) in the "Erlebnispark Meeres-Aquarium", because I never heard about crocodiles living in any ocean.
We did not find only crocodiles and caimans, but also turtles and even more fish.
The crocodiles were obviously only sleeping and digesting as I could smell. It would be interesting seeing them getting fed.
Slowly, we became hungry too. My son recommended the restaurant in the upper floor (accessible also by elevator) and we enjoyed a light snack and some none alcoholic drinks.
