I often visited Amberg when I lived in Nuremberg. The over a thousand year old town always surprised me with something new to discover; even very old things can be new. I learned for example that in past time this town was given as a gift to a bishop by Kaiser Konrad
II. I wonder what the bishop did to receive such a gift.
I also loved to drive or even to walk through old downtown.
Naturally, I did this with occasional breaks which were accompanied by ice cream, a coffee with cake or a beer and something real to eat.
I always try local food and you should do the same when you are away.
The old city hall or "Rathaus" (not rat house) of Amberg
Isn't it nice to keep old city halls? This building was already mentioned in 1348.
Elizabeth is seriously addicted to old buildings - especially when they are used for boutiques, perfumeries etc.
She screws up every strict time schedule by trying to visit all of them.
For that reason I only do a rough planning which makes sure that we are at the airport at the right time when we came from Canada. As long as we lived in Germany we could keep our excursions
less stressful.
I will never learn how anybody can see all of Europe in seven days. I want to enjoy vacations and whenever we feel like going swimming or to do something else we discovered, we go for
it.
If you share our philosophy, please visit the "Kurfürsten-Erlebnisbad" after an exhausting day of touring the old town and hopefully one of the interesting museums. Please pick up tourist information in Amberg that you don't miss anything!
The so called "Stadtbrille" on the river Vils
"Stadtbrille" could be translated with "town glasses". I think the name was given because this part of the old town fortification looks likes eye glasses with the mirror effect in the water.
If you like what you see, please consider to have a boat ride on the Vils. Strange looking boats called "Plätten" will take you on an unforgettable trip.
I thinks it's relaxing and fun to go go on a "Plätten ride"
I am confident that you won't get seasick and you'll be able to take some good pictures if you do not forget your camera like I did.
