Altötting is the most visited place of catholic pilgrims in Germany.
Even not being catholic and having no intentions to fake a pilgrimage, we also visited the village. But we ere interested to spend some time in this town which is over 1200 years old.
We did not visit all the churches and shrines, but we recommend if you want to do that to collect as many available information as possible. Use the Internet or collect brochures when you arrive there.
Again - many of the pictures i took were lost during a break in and I am thankful to all the help I got.
At the time of our visit my walking was still fine and we did lots of it. In many places religious souvenirs were offered. But we were not interested in those.
We just enjoyed the atmosphere of this ancient town and did sightseeing.

Altötting Johann von Tilly - many thanks to Bene16 and Wikipedia
Johann von Tilly was not born in Altötting but in Walloon Brabant. He was educated by the Jesuits. However, he did not become priest. He choose the military and was bravely fighting against the Turks in Hungary. The Turks tried to conquer major parts of Europe at this time.
Discussions are still going on wether he became a war criminal during the fights against the protestants.
You must check the available literature to build up your own opinion. Many things which happened at this time were not better than that what the Talibans are doing today.

Basilica St. Anna
"St. Anna" was built 1910 to 1912 to accommodate all of the pilgrims. Over 8000 people can attend Mass at the same time. In 1913 Pope Pius X gave her the title of a Papal Basilica.
This church is much older. It was built between 1499 and 1511 as the last church in Gothic style and is the third church building at this location.
Lately the grave of King Karlmann was discovered who was buried here in the first church the "Pfalzbastilika" around 880. In 907 this church was destroyed during a war and a new church was built in the early 13 th century.
Parts of this building have been included in the new "Stiftpfarrkirche".
There are many other interesting things to see in Altötting. One of them is the so called "Panorama" which is a huge (approximately 1200 square meter or 1330 Sq. yards) painting of the crucifixion of Christ. You will find it in a building with a dome-shaped roof.
