The Siege of Forte Erie
The "British" Camp
Event, Tourism Ontario, Travel guide
I was not successful in finding out wether there were volunteers which came from the UK to participate in this event. If they knew about it I think some would join.
Naturally I talked to people who had an English, Irish or Scottish accent, but they all came from Canada and everybody was very friendly and spent time with me.
All the volunteers had lots of fun and obviously a very good time do something completely different. A retired university professor was really excited to play a certain role during this event and he gave me many information.
This group was filmed by a TV team. I should have done that too because I liked the music they played and in addition the smell coming from the barbecue.
Unfortunately I was too lazy to carry also my video camera with me when I strolled through the camps
Please follow my advise an arrive early to have enough time to explore the "British" and the "American" camp.
Ask them questions and watch them during their various activities.
The fun they have by bringing history back is certainly worth all the expenses they have. To buy the weapons, the gun powder, the uniforms, the traveling costs etc. is not cheap and a larger audience than I have seen would be good reward.
Also the town of Fort Erie could get much more recognition if they would do the right things. The whole event lasts two days - so could visitors. Restaurants could offer authentic meals instead of the usual stuff which you find everywhere in the Niagara Region.
Everybody was in a good mood
I began already here to feel hungry
Is the look of the food on the table which has been prepared by these healthy looking people not mouth watering - and you even can smell it by seeing my web site.
As you can see some families joined to prepare the dinner, Everybody prepared something different, but no hamburgers or hot dogs. Another reason why I think it should be allowed to serve some of the food to paying visitors.
Authentic or at least old fashioned cooking utensils, such as cast iron pots and kettles were used everywhere. No ghetto blasters, portable TV's etc. were used for entertainment. I loved it!
Who would not like to join?
My hunger was growing very fast and it was almost a torture to watch the adults and the children enjoying the freshly prepared food.
I was surprised how quiet and well behaved all the children were. No screaming or fighting and good table manners.
Everybody was dressed in costumes of the early 19 th. century.
I already knew that the restaurant and gift shop on the premises will be closed for dinner so I kept starving and was wondering who made these rules.
I wish it would be allowed that the volunteers could invite paying guests or to organize something to treat visitors with authentic meals.
Similar to the Americans also the British and Canadian fighters were preparing them selves for the upcoming battle.
Instructions were given, the weapons got checked over and over, last exercises performed to beat the intruders and push them back across the Niagara River.
I did not see a single person consuming alcohol to feel stronger or braver. But who knows? It was a known practise.
The children were not too much interested in all that. They had fun to be in costumes and acting as young entrepreneurs.
When I was young and in the same age group we did the same by collecting medicinal herbs and selling them. Unfortunately, I forgot everything what I learned at that time. We were digging out certain roots which we could only find in the forest. Making some money became almost a full time job and was more important than school for us. That was the bad side effect.
I was always very pleased when I talked to children. I purchased some of the little straw puppets which they had made.
