If you visit beautiful Ontario for vacations and travel by car, please do not only use the big highways. You will miss many things and traveling on smaller highways is also less stressful.
I think sometimes it more risky to drive on a highways such as the 401 with around 100 km/h than on the "Autobahn" without any speed limit.
Some of our American visitors were also complaining about the poor discipline of some drivers in Ontario. It is not the speeding, it is jumping lanes, squeezing in the space you left to the car ahead of you.
The police could easily solve all budget problems by "educating" these maniacs.
You can get fresh fruits almost everywhere in Ontario
Such a basket of apples will keep Elizabeth busy for about two days. She loves apples and became a vegetarian a few years ago. Before she enjoyed raw meat!
Luckily we have three apple trees in our garden. Because we do not use any poison some of the apples have worms and as a true vegetarian she does not eat apples with worms. I cut those pieces out.
How can we produce "Bio Apples" without worms?
Naturally, you are slower using country roads, but you can stop almost everywhere to take picture and have a lunch or breakfast at a nice little restaurant.
Even most of them accept internationally know credit cards, such as VISA or MasterCard. With others you may experience problems.
On the main highways there are only a few service centers with washrooms and the well known fast food outlets.
A free boat launch
Lonely house on a lake
Most of the nature is fenced in. That was a big surprise for me when I came from Germany. Over there you have free access to forests or farm land, but every house has a fence. Here it is just reverse. Only swimming pools must have a fence.
Also there is a lack of clean public washrooms. Please be aware of that and use those offered by fast food restaurants, but not without buying a coffee or a pop.
Quebec has much higher standards with respect to that.

Elizabeth, my wife, is always fascinated by clouds. During our trips through Newfoundland she took many beautiful pictures.
I took the following on in Ontario.
A reason to stop and take pictures
the old mill at the Lang Pioneer Village
Canada is still proud of the railway system which was built in the 19 th. century. Many connections which brought booming business to communities are not any longer existing.
Some of the railway tracks have been removed and now you can find bicycle or hiking trails instead of trains.
I would like to use a bike on this path - but walking???
I personally, like the northern part of Ontario for vacationing almost better than the southern part. Less industry means cleaner air and cleaner water - but not always.
Also less people and less commercial attractions. Probably most Europeans expect that from Canada.
We dot come to this great country just for shopping.
Have you ever made vacations in a cottage? We did and loved it.
No dress code, barbecuing, swimming, boating, little trips and meeting nice people.
We love vacations in a cottage
Always something to discover
