The "Niagara Peninsula" offers another attraction - the Welland Canal. Visit the site from the "St. Catharines Museum" to get some information.
I tried to prepare German web site, but was not allowed to take any pictures or use information. They send me pictures of children playing somewhere on the floor which is of no help.
All this after a very friendly and very knowledgeable older gentleman gave me great tour. He worked as a volunteer.
I made a similar experience in Thuringia, Germany. Stupidity without borders!
The "Welland Canal" in Port Colborne
The "Welland Canal"
This is the third canal which has been built.
Despite the energy crisis and clean air acts the transportation of cargo within Canada by boats or freight trains is not growing.
If we can achieve to attract manufacturers for wind turbines to our area I can see benefits for them by using sea transportation for the heavy and huge components. A manufacturer of towers for wind turbines is already doing that.
The traffic on the "Welland Canal" is naturally affected by the weather. With huge ice build up on the St. Lawrence River it will be closed down during this season.
To see the big boats coming from different nations so close that you could touch them, or using the locks you must come when it is warm.
A good place to see the boats is from a parking lot close to one of the lift bridges.

We will prepare also an English web site for a tour along the scenic Niagara River.
This will happen very soon.
Just visit this site to see what to expect. No pictures or words can replace the actual experience. Stop at the numerous clean parking lots - sorry no washrooms!
Queenston Heights Park - here you can find a classy restaurant with breathtaking sights on the Niagara River.
The Flower Clock is a well known attraction
I met this group at one of my visits
To enjoy the scenery is the essential part of such a tour. But you still can do some shopping, either for fruits, snacks or souvenirs.
A tour with the Maid of the Mist is something you should not miss
Same applies for crossing the river with the Spanish Cable Car
During summer at the "Whirlpool" on Niagara River
Climb down the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve - you can access it from here
If you travel by car and see a sign "Yard Sale" or "Garage Sale" stop and check.
May be you will find something very cheap which you want to take home as souvenir. Occasionally you may even discover a little treasure.
This is the way to get rid of things which are not any longer needed. The vendors gave very often fun doing this and they even get some tax free money out of it.
I purchased very often some books.
"Yard-" oder "Garage Sales" are very popular
Once upon a time Fort Erie was host to many exciting events such as "Edinburgh 1745", the battle of the Jakobites against the English.
