A scenic drive on the "Niagara Parkway" along the "Niagara River", Ontario, Canada, tourism, travel guide
Part 1
Deutsch

Whenever you are in the "Niagara Region" you should reserve sufficient time for the most scenic drive in this area. The Niagara Parkway follows the Niagara River which flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The route is only 56 km long and many people drive slower than the allowed 60 km/h.
On your way you will see many attractions. Stop at the various parking lots and enjoy breathtaking sights. It is up you where you want to start either in Fort Erie or in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Because I wanted to follow the flow of the river our brief description used Fort Erie as a starting point.

It is called "Old Fort Erie", but it is not as old as you may think. What you see today is not the original fort, it was reconstructed in the thirties of last century. However, you find similar things also in Europe and it is always a pleasure to visit the fort which is located very close to the shore of Lake Erie. Special highlights are the events which take place there. Just ask for more details. We will show some of them on our new English language web site as we did in our German Internet tourist guide for Ontario.
One of the main events is the "Siege of Fort Erie". Volunteers from the USA and Canada bring back a fierce fight when the British tried to conquer the Fort which was occupied by the Americans. It is a two day spectacle and I always enjoyed not only the battle scenes but also to talk to the participants.
The "Old Fort Erie" is also a great background for many other celebrations based on the history of Canada and the USA.

Fort Erie itself is a border town. On the other side of the lake and the Niagara River which starts here is Buffalo. Buffalo belongs to NY State and is still the target of many Canadian shoppers.
Both countries are connected through the "Peace Bridge". For many years there were discussions of building a new and wider bridge to allow a better flow of the traffic. Now I did not here anything about that any more, but an US proposal to built a wall or a fence along the border to protect the United States against illegal immigrants and terrorists. I hope that this proposal will not be taken serious and approved. There are better ways to solve these problems when both countries work together.

We are still on the Niagara Parkway section between Fort Erie and Niagara Falls.
Here on the "Chippawa Battlefield" a bloody battle against the American invaders took place in 1814. The Americana won for the first time, but lost after that the battle at "Lundy's Lane". They had to retract their troops to Fort Erie.
Visit the museum and learn more about all that.
