Map of the northern part of the east coast of Labrador which is accessible by car
Luckily we had net a nice family on the ferry which helped especially me to survive a sleepless night. I even did not want to try the food - I only had something to drink.
I did not try to find out how the weather was.
When we arrived in Cartwright is was bad.
During the ferry trip we also met the owner of the restaurant shown below. We enjoyed a real good breakfast with lots of coffee there.
I was happy to be on solid ground and to breathe fresh air
A good breakfast which is served to you. It will be on the table in a few minutes when Elizabeth is back.
The first thing which I did after breakfast was filling up the fuel tank. It was expensive but a little bit cheaper than in Goose Bay. Taxes were higher here than in Ontario and transportation costs naturally more.
The fog and the rain added a bad image to Cartwright. It is certainly a very interesting place but we could not stay.
Driving to the south of Labrador
Again great nature, no villages, no houses, no people and only a few cars
Now we know why Labrador is called "The Big Land"
Native people put up their signs
Check the Internet to learn more about these signs, called Inukshuks
When we saw a sign "Charlottetown", we checked our map and decided to make a side trip. We learned later that this was new road which will be closed during winter.
We had lunch in a little very clean restaurant and met there somebody from the ferry. Even in the "The Big Land" the world can be small.
Then another couple arrived. Everybody was allowed to use the coffee pot without asking. Elizabeth and the wife from the newly arrived couple collected later stones on the beach. I was happy to see both of them happy. Rocks are cheaper than socks and last longer.
The only gas station in Charlottetown
Good bye little Charlottetown
It did not take too much time to drive back to Highway 510. We passed Port Hope Simpson. We spend only time to take some pictures.
Later we decided to visit St. Lewis which was another side trip to the coast.
