Midland and surroundings - many thanks to MapArt
Midland became very early one of our favorite places. Our first visit was strictly business. We delivered some merchandise to a new customer and felt immediately in love with this city.
The development of Midland was boosted during the end of the 19 th century by the railway and it became a town in 1890. Fortunately the town kept its own character.
Midland has a population of about 17 000.
Similar to Welland it is also know for its murals.

In the harbour area you will find the impressing sculpture of a trumpet swan. Doesn't it look like a modern aircraft?
Real trumpet swans you can watch in the near by "Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre". Especially Elizabeth loved it there. We even got a personalized tour because I promised to create a German website in return what I did..

We were surprised to find in the town a beautiful little lake surrounded by meadows. The lake was shallow and the water warm.
Believe it or not - even Elizabeth went into it. The lake is called the "Little Lake" and it is not so little according to German standards.
The "Little Lake" in Midland
The water was very shallow and so warm, that even Elizabeth, my wife, went in. The lake is part of the Municipal Little Lake Park

The location of Midland makes it to a perfect starting point for many sightseeing tours. There are so many attractions around this beautiful town. Reserve enough time to see all of them!
Unfortunately our time was limited at that time and we never participated in a boat tour to the "30,000 Islands" but we did not miss many of the other attractions.
Use the links in the right columns to see what we did.
Later we had time and we visited Thuringia in Germany and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Now I am updating my travel guides for Ontario - but Elizabeth's health must improve before we can do more than brief day trips.
Watch the YouTube videos below to see what we missed in this area.
The Georgian Bay close to Midland
It is interesting to learn something about the past of this area. The first European settlers arrived already during the 16 th century.
Visit the reconstructed mission station "Sainte-Marie among the Hurons". The original was built in 1639 by the Jesuits. I was told that many Hurons became Christians and that they had a very friendly relationship to the priests.
Then the Iroquois declared war to the Hurons. During the fighting also some priests were taken prisoner and tortured.
Saint-Marie among the Hurons
In order not to leave the mission station to the Iroquois the remaining priests and Hurons burned it down before they fled.
Visit our brief web site for "Saint-Marie among the Hurons".
Visit also the "Huronia Museum & Huron Indian Village". It is very interesting and a little gallery is part of this rebuilt village.
In remembrance to the missionaries who lost their lives the world famous church "Martyrs' Shrine" was built in 1926. Even a pope visited it.
