Midland and surroundings - many thanks to MapArt

Midland became very early one of our favorite places. Our first visit was strictly business. We delivered some merchandise to a new customer and felt immediately in love with this city.
The development of Midland was boosted during the end of the 19 th century by the railway and it became a town in 1890. Fortunately the town kept its own character

Downtown Midland

Believe it or not - we went swimming in Midland. The lake is called the "Little Lake" and it is not so little.

The "Little Lake" in Midland

The water was very shallow and so warm, that even Elizabeth, my wife, went in. The lake is part of the Municipal Little Lake Park

The location of Midland makes it to a perfect starting point for many sightseeing tours. There are so many attractions around this beautiful town.

It is interesting to learn something about the past of this area. The first European settlers arrived already during the 16 th century.
Visit the reconstructed mission station "Sainte-Marie among the Hurons". The original was built in 1639 by the Jesuits. I was told that many Hurons became Christians and that they had a very friendly relationship to the priests.
Then the Iroquois declared war to the Hurons. During the fighting also some priests were taken prisoner and tortured.

Saint-Marie among the Hurons

In order not to leave the mission station to the Iroquois the remaining priests and Hurons burned it down before they fled.
Visit our brief web site for "Saint-Marie among the Hurons".
Visit also the "Huronia Museum & Huron Indian Village". It is very interesting and a little gallery ia part of this rebuilt village.
In remembrance to the missionaries who lost their lives the world famous church "Martyrs' Shrine" was built in 1926. Even a pope visited it.

Please browse the Internet to find more information about this church. Our capabilities are limited.
Nature lovers should not miss to visit the "Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre". We joined a guided tour which provided many interesting information.
