Gravenhurst and surroundings - many thanks to MapArt
Gravenhurst names itself the "Gateway to the Muskoka Lakes". I am still surprised about the names which cities assign to themselves. But Gravenhurst is a pretty little town in a great area. That is what counts for me.
You should spend some time here or even better stay here for a few days. There is much do discover and to do.
Join a round trip on the historic steamship Segwun
Don't miss to book a leisurely trip on one of the historic steam ships. It is certainly an unforgettable event.
Obviously there is a big demand for those nostalgic cruises because there was just work going on to renovate another antique vessel.
Spend some time in the harbor. There are many things to see like this totem pole and or just relax with a cup of ice cream.
Elizabeth's parents were with us. Elizabeth is my wife. Her dad enjoyed the sight and an ice cream during we strolled around.
Later we joined him. We loved it here and enjoyed the clean air.
Gravenhurst and its surroundings are certainly a perfect place for relaxing holidays.

Take a short detour to the town center. Some houses are decorated with interesting murals. Something that you find here more often.

Surprisingly Gravenhurst has also a small opera house. I never heard that an opera was performed during the last few years. However, they offer many other performances including dinner theater. Check their program!
The sound system as well seating should be excellent.
If you believe that there is nothing left for art and attend a performance. By the way - Gravenhurst has only about 10 000 inhabitants.
Be sure to get a free information leaflet with a detailed map. There are so many gems to discover.
Did you know, for example that the birthplace of Dr. Norman Bethune, the famous Canadian doctor who worked in China is in Gravenhurst? He is celebrated as a hero.
Dr. Bethune is particularly well known by modern surgical techniques and the introduction of a mobile blood transfusion service in the so-called "Spanish Civil War".
Maybe you've even seen the movie about him?

Between 1940 and 1946 German prisoners of war were allowed to go on vacation in Gravenhurst. That was in the "Muskoka officers club". I hope they were treated well there. There are no remains from the prison camp but you can get information about it. Ask where.
