We love to visit the "Getaway Country". On business we have been there several times. Now we have changed what we are doing and do not travel any longer so much in Ontario. But we will come back to relax in the beautiful nature, visit some of the local events, do more sightseeing and hopefully can enjoy swimming.
"Getaway Country" is less populated than the southern part of Ontario. This is an attraction when you come from a densely populated country like Germany. You find here much more what you expect from Canada.
On the road close to Peterborough
Please note: If you travel from Toronto, please be aware that Highway 401 is often very crowded. Using Highway 2 instead can be much more relaxing and saver. In Germany we doe not have any speed limits on parts of our autobahn, but most people know how to handle that. On Highway 401 you can easily find a proof that this would not work in Ontario. You get tailgated, passed on the right hand side, when you use the middle lane to allow cars to enter the traffic from an entrance. The drivers change continuously lanes if they see a gap - driving is not a pleasure, unless you enjoy it when one of these idiotic drivers gets airborne. I never saw any police to stop that kind of dangerous driving.
Much more discipline in Quebec!
Many thanks for this picture from the "Rice Lake" to "Northumberland Tourism"
Beautiful scenery even in fall when it is raining
The left picture shows the Rice Lake in the background. We were late and did not want to visit the lake on this rainy evening.
The lake is part of the "Trent-Severn Waterway". We always wanted to travel along this natural attraction, but getting almost no income from our travel guides, we cannot do it!
We started with a German Internet travel guide and received numerous requests for an English variant which we are working on, but we need to revisit certain places to keep everything updated.
Visit Lang Pioneer Village close to Keene
Another advise: because of our business we did not travel in high season. Despite the claims that Ontario is a tourist destination all year long, most attractions are closed during the "low seasons". How Ontario will achieve the promised objective is a mystery for me.
The "Lang Pioneer Village" close to Keene was only one example. Please be aware of this fact when you plan a trip. We had already a few disappointed friend who visited us from Europe.
