As already said, Fergus and Elora are sister towns in the historic "Wellington County". We visited this area every year, but always in the "wrong" season because business aspects had priority.
For that reason our last trip was in November, but we still enjoyed it very much. One year we hope to come in summer to do and see all that what we missed including the famous highland games.
We hope that we can rent a boat for a short trip on the Grand River.
We stayed in a beautiful B & B dirctly on the banks of the Grand River. Fishing and canoeing or kajaking are the favorite activities of most guests.
Our host was an expert in fly fishing.
Certainly a great place for realxing in summmer.

We always stayed in a bed & breakfast place directly located on the banks of the Grand River.
Our host was a fly fishing fan and had even the equipment for fly tying.
If you want to go fishing, please get a license and familiarize yourself with the regulations. Catch and release may apply for certain fish.
We had lots of room and privacy in the place where we stayed. We used the complete lower level of the house and had our own entrance. We enjoyed reading and watching TV in front of a gas fire place. The breakfast was prepared according to our wishes. For me, the German, a heavy one with bacon and eggs, for my wife, the Canadian fruit salad and bird food (Musli).
Nobody cleaned up the table before I took the picture
Naturally, we went out for lunch and dinner. Besides the local people, we were the only visitors and everybody treated us very good. I am always amazed about the friendliness of people in Canada and the USA. You feel as a guest and not as a disturbance or a source of money.
All of Fergus must have a Scottish heritage. Most of the street names gave me the impression of being in Scotland and most of the restaurants looked also Scottish to me as long as they were not fast food places.
Elizabeth told me dreadful stories about her favorite Scottish dishes such as "Hegas" a stuffed sheep stomach etc. I wanted to test her, but unfortunately it was not on the menu. However, I believe her because when we travelled during Germany she loved "Saumagen" which is as stuffed pigs stomach. Even I tried that and I must admit it was good. Mr. Kohl, a former chancellor of Germany treated all his guests with that dish.
Soon we became a good customer
Despite the weather we walked through the town and we liked it. It had much more character than others where everything was modernizes and looked the same. Fergus still has lots of character!
Well kept and a pleasure to see
The "Wellington County Museum & Archives"
In earlier times Fergus was known as "Little Falls". Fergus sounds much more Scottish.
You should visit this museum if you are interested to learn how people lived here in the 19 th century. It is also interesting for children.
Fergus is well know for its "Highland Games" which take place every year at the second weekend in August.
We have visited "Highland Games" in Fort Erie and as I was told Fergus has the best. We never could proof this. But without any doubt the well kept lime stone buildings and the flair of Fergus are definitely a benefit.
I always like it to listen to the drums and pipes - at least for a certain time - and to watch the traditional competitions in sports and other demonstrations.
I also enjoyed to party with people from Scotland - they are fun!
A few years ago, we became also theatre fans. The local "Theatre at the Grand" was highly recommended to us. Unfortunately there was no performance when we stayed in Fergus.
This is one of the Scottish bands who performed in Forte Erie
Not only the people of Fergus made us feel good, the complete surrounding was enjoyable, the over one hundred year old lime stone buildings were well kept, nice little stores for shopping and naturally the nature surrounding the town.
The mistakes of other towns have obviously been avoided in Fergus. I always started arguing with "progressive" Canadians when they considered an older building as unsafe or an eye sore and replaced it by an ugly new construction. No wonder that so many places look the same.
Der Grand River ist hier schmal und reisend.
