Elmira is part of the township of Woolwich and a lovely place of approximately 7300 inhabitants. It is located in the heart of an area which was settled by German Mennonites during the early 18 th century. Most of these settlers moved away from Pennsylvania.
We have to visit Elmira again at the right time to take some pictures but we can tell you that this is a place where you can learn all essential about maple syrup and enjoy a good meal.
Every spring you can visit the famous "Maple Syrup Festival". Unfortunately, it is only a one day event. The last time when we tried to visit it, all roads were jammed and we turned around.
You can try all kind of food prepared with maple syrup. If you come from overseas try Canadian pan cakes with maple syrup. If they are done right they taste delicious. North American pan cakes are thick - not thin like crepes - and we have restaurants which are specialized on them.
If you like them you can buy pan cake mix in every supermarket. Just mix it with water and you can prepare your own Canadian Pan cakes at home.
Another speciality of Elmira and the area around is quilting. Just check the stores.
Visit West Montrose and take pictures from the roofed bridge.
