Drums and traditional songs in the origin language are an essential part of every Powwow. Natural lots of practise is mandatory to keep the required skills up to date.
A native friend who knew that we are interested in the culture of our native people recommended that we should visit non of these practises in the ":Native Friendship Centre" in Fort Erie.
Elizabeth my wife found out the date of one of these events and we both went together with our friend Gaye.
It took about half an hour until all the drummers and their relatives showed up. So be prepared that their is no stress to keep a posted schedule. We used this time to familiarize us by reading information about ongoing programs and activities - also about offered help.
A part of the welcome ceremony was that were told to spread some tobacco which was give to us on the drums.
We were the only "aliens", but everybody was very friendly to us and we were also invited to share the provided food which was not at all native cuisine, but pizza, chips, fruits and juices, but no alcohol! Also smoking was not allowed. It was only allowed to burn tobacco as part of the ceremony!
Everything was free. Nobody asked us for any money or contributions.
