Description:

The castle "Bertholdsburg" which dominates Schleusingen is one of the major attractions of the Hildburghausen Region. It was erected in medieval times between 1223 and 1232. Today, the castle represents the condition of around 1550. The castle is not only an attraction by itself. It is also a museum and it hosts several exhibitions. The most attractive one is certainly the part which is called "the Museum of Natural History" which has been established in 1984. It includes many collections and displays.

Description:

The castle dates back to the 12 th century. At the beginning of the 14 th century it was used by the nobles of "Henneberg". During the "Thirty Years War" it was plundered and badly damaged. Nobody cared about the castle until Duke Georg II. from Sachsen-Meiningen started renovating it in the 19 th century. He got inspired by castle "Neuschwanstein".

Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach and members of his family lived in this house in earlier days. The house is also a museum for historical instruments and the great attraction is that you listen to them in a demonstration. Guided tours in English language are provided, but we recommend that you contact the museum in advance.

Hildburghausen can be traced back to the year 1234. The museum provides many information about the town's history. This includes also the influence of the so called "Third Reich" which changed also things in this little town. Original propaganda is displayed to document this.

The museum was established in 1901. Much renovation work has been done in the years after the unification. But more work is needed to organize the archives to allow easier access for research. Especially, the extensive library is used by an international clientele. It contains over 30 000 publications which can be used within the museum by anybody. Reserve at least half a day if you want to see everything.
