The first settlers in the Burk's Falls area were wood cutters around 1660. The falls and later the village were named after one of these settlers a David Francis Burk. The roofed bridge over the "Magnetawan River" was also built in these early days.
Certainly not the original bridge!

The water is very clear
These are the real falls!
I was questioning myself wether these are the famous falls. I was expecting something like the falls in Niagara Falls but smaller.
Before we proceeded with out trip to Callander and the "Rockview Camp" we did some grocery shopping in Burk's Falls. As we learned through our shopping tour each of the approximately 1000 inhabitants which we met was extremely friendly.
Here we met people who lived once in Welland - so small is Canada!

We got whatever we needed. Knowing that all cottages are well equipped including fridges we included fresh meat, juices, cream, milk, butter, eggs etc.
Most of the cottage resorts have only a small store for the essentials and normally no restaurant. Barbecuing a steak in front of your cottage is always more fun than going out for dinner. Especially then when you have nice company as we had - the always hungry chipmunks.
For that reason we added a bag of peanuts in shells to the groceries.
We love to go shopping in local privately operated stores in smaller communities. The prices are normally similar to those in big chain store and the service is very often even better and more friendly. Most of the time they are also closer.
