Amherstburg has a population of approximately 22 000. It was named after Jeffery Amherst who was a British commander in the 18 th century.

Amherstburg is located where the Detroit River ends in Lake Erie. It played an essential role when black slaves found safety in Canada. Learn more about that in the North American Black Historical Museum.
In return Canadian alcohol was smuggled during the prohibition into the USA. I was told that a factory was built just for that purpose. Can that be true?
We have to visit Amherstburg again to update this web site. During a break in our computer with all the images and notes was stolen and all my backups where on a second hard drive in this computer. We are looking forward to do this because Amherstburg is a lovely old town - one of the oldest ones in Ontario. Hopefully we can come when one of the events takes place.

Today the river is an essential part of the transport system which connects the great lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.
Naturally it is also an attraction by fishermen and many tourists.
Please so not miss to visit Fort Malden which is located in the "Malden Historical Park".
The British tried in 1812 to attack Detroit. In an counter attack the Americans conquered and destroyed the fort a year later.

After having destroyed the fort the American began to build a new but smaller one on the same location.
However they were not able to complete it before the war ended and it was returned to the British including all the surrounding area which they had occupied.
The British completed the construction but did not use it for a long time for military purposes.
It seems logical to me that it was converted into a lunatic asylum which was used until 1870. Also many trees were planted in this time.
Last century it became the "Fort Malden National Historic Site" where visitors from all over the world can enjoy a relaxing and peaceful time and learn many details about the history of the war of 1812,

This museum was opened in 1975 to show and honor the contributions of the black North Americans who found a refuge in Canada.
Use the Internet or visit a local tourist office to get more information - I did not study history. They also will inform you about events. You will be surprised what the little town of Amherstburg has to offer besides accommodations, restaurants and war history. Check the Internet if we raised your interest.
