Visit and explore the tourism region: "Ottawa and Countryside" Canada, Ontario, Tourism, Travel Guide
Overview of the Tourism Region 10: Ottawa and Countryside
Ottawa and surroundings
Of course, we have been to our state capital Ottawa several times. One time even by helicopter with colleagues when I was still was still fully employed to participate in discussions with the government.
Then I retired and decided to become self-employed and that's what I am today. I do not want to rest and rust!
Unfortunately I have to repeat again that many of my own pictures were lost with my stolen computer. I got and still get some support. This time even through the city of Ottawa. Many Thanks!
The bridge in Ottawa to Quebec - Photo by User: P199 at Wikimedia Commons
I have very good memories of Ottawa.
However, most of my visits were purely business related and I was only occasionally able to use the evening to see something.
I took a walk to Hull in Quebec on foot, Both cities are connected by the bridge shown above. Walking was not a problem for me then.
Please don't miss to get also a little bit of taste of Quebec -maybe you fall also in love with this province which conserved much of its French culture and life style.
Elizabeth and I had always a pleasant time there despite the language barrier. My French which i had learned a s child and had practiced in France was not of any major help, Even people from France had a problem.
Privately, Elizabeth and I were only once in Ottawa to visit a former Chinese colleague of mine. We arrived quite late and were warmly welcomed and guided to a very good Chinese restaurant. The following days we used for sightseeing. There is so much to see that this can easily be extended to 2 weeks and still there is still plenty left for another visit.
The rural surroundings of Ottawa are also very attractive. The bigger places, however, I do not necessarily recommend as attractive for tourists but for business people.

Kanata is officially a large and still growing suburb of Ottawa and a so-called "hi-tech center"
Between Kanata and Nepean lies a green belt - the "National Capital Commission's Greenbelt".
Many who work in Ottawa have settled in Stittsville - also a suburb of Ottawa.
A video shows what you do there in winter.

Nepean is also a part of Ottawa. Now I finally know why the population of Ottawa is so high. A capital must always be big - Bonn in Germany was obviously a temporary exception.
After all, about another 180 000 inhabitants are added with Nepean.
The small Limoges with the big water park - Photo by User: P199 at Wikimedia Commons
If you want to try a Canadian wave pool you drive to Limoges. There you will find the "Calypso Theme Waterpark". The advertising promises that this is the largest one in Canada.
Take a look at the video and watch the trip to the Congo and decide for yourself if you prefer the natural waves in one of the many lakes or go to the pool. When you have kids the choice is certainly easy.
During our visits to Thuringia we visited a wave pool without adventure tours and still enjoyed it.
One thing is for sure - it is a quite expensive fun. Be sure to use the internet for more videos and more detailed information.

The "Watson's Mill" - Photo by User:Simon Pulsifer at Wikimedia Commons
Manotick is located in the rural surroundings of our capital and was incorporated by it also.
The place is located on the "Rideau River". The old mill known as "Watson's Mill". It is today a living museum. The old technology is demonstrated. In the past, a sawmill was connected.
During the war when I was still a child we were relocated to Upper Franconia. In "Aisch an der Aisch" we lived directly opposite of a mill with sawmill. These where old memories which come alive now in Canada..
If you come to Manotick ask for more places worth seeing in the place.
