Visit and explore the Tourism Region: "Northeastern Ontario" Canada, Ontario, Tourism, Travel Guide
Rough outline map for the Tourism Region 13a: "Northeastern Ontario" Canada, Ontario, Tourism, Travel Guide
This tourism region is certainly one of the areas that offers what many expect of a vacation in Canada - countless outdoor activities such as fishing, kayaking or canoeing, cycling or biking and naturally all that in unspoiled nature.
Having lived in Ontario for over 30 years, we had visited many parts of this area. Mostly on business and at the beginning without a digital camera.
After I had decided to promote tourism between Germany and Canada I started in the early nineties with a German Internet travel guide for Ontario which I updated continuously.
Then I started with an English travel guide for Bavaria and I already used a digital camera. I saved all the images on a second hard drive on my computer. Then we had a break in and the computer was stolen. Many pictures of our trips in Ontario and Bavaria were lost. For that reason I had to use many pictures from donors. Many of them are even better than my own ones. Now I am improving my equipment and also my skills.
Unfortunately, we have not made it to the far north of Ontario yet. But we still hope to be able to do that someday. However, the prospects are not good, as my wife Elizabeth became very ill and I am now severely handicapped.
Unlike many official sites, we always want to help you with maps. Many thanks to the donors especially to Google!
Now I converted our website for Ontario to the new tourism regions. and old memory come back. The travel notes from Elizabeth are also a great help. In addition I included many new things and removed also outdated information.
The clear lakes with their small rocky islands, the forests, the friendly people in all the small towns and the few larger cities all made it an unforgettable experience for us in summer or autumn.
We usually avoided winter because skinny Elizabeth always freezes. One exception was ice fishing in Callander and a tour with a snowmobile in Newfoundland. Several layers of clothing helped her to survive and even to have fun.
During winter we came for ice fishing
Not only Elizabeth enjoyed these cute little animals

(Thank you for the picture of the "Killarney Mountain Lodge")
We enjoyed that this area is not very densely populated. We were not looking for the big hotel chains which are only present in very few places. We mostly spent the holidays in a cottage resort and made smaller trips from there.

In addition you have much more space than in a hotel room, you must not follow a dress code and it is also cost saving because you can prepare little meals by yourself. Barbecuing is fun and I do not consider it as work. Children will also love the outdoors.

You will find signs for accommodations everywhere. However, we still recommend not to come at the high season with out a reservation. The best places are certainly all booked out..
For shorter stays we used motels or bed and breakfast as an alternative. Prepare yourself through a study on the internet. In the main season you have to expect problems finding a vacant accommodation without prior booking.
We had always taken this risk. Most of the time we ere lucky. The decision is of course yours.
A motel in Chapleau
Shopping has never been a high priority on our trips. We usually do that at home in stores that we know.
Small gifts of local specialties or good handicrafts are an exception as well as things we forgot to take with us.
The honey shop was such an exception. We bought honey products that we had never seen or tasted before
In the honey shop
Honey specialties - we always bought some as a gift
We loved to visit small museums. They usually showed things from the surrounding area. Elizabeth collects antiques to decorate our home. I've gotten used to it by now.
Often we were the only visitors and we got always all the attention and many interesting information from the staff of the museums. Mostly older people who did this voluntarily and without pay.
I have never had problems taking pictures there. St. Catharines and Welland in our area should learn from them! But I love the museum and its management in Port Colborne.
Interesting - small, local museums - like here in Mattawa
We were always very lucky with the weather. It rained only occasionally and then only briefly.
Often we went on little trips without any planning just to explore the area. Do that too!
You will be surprised how many little things you can discover and experience..
Please send us pictures and short reports that we may use to add more flavour to our websites..
