Lowbanks in Southwest Ontario
Please study this "Google Map" or use your GPS if your car is equipped with one to follow our rat run along Lake Erie to Lowbanks a hamlet nicely located on this lake. We normally start our tour in Port Colborne.
Stop at the "Mohawk Marina" for a short break with some refreshments or even something to eat and enjoy the sights. There are not too many places which offer that. We always do that if the weather is nice.
very often we are on our way to spend a relaxing afternoon in the close by "Rockpoint Provincial Park". It is well known by campers and owners from motor homes . Visit our website for more information.
You can buy a day pass.
The lake is very shallow here and the water temperature is normally very pleasant for most people - except for my wife. She prefers temperatures like in a hot tub where not a single fish could survive.
Shortly before Lowbanks
Congratulations to the winner of an Oldtimer
The "Hippo's" is well known for its Lake Erie perch. I am not a seafood fan - except skinless and boneless sardines from Portugal in olive oil. So I just had a hamburger and a beer.
A few days ago I made a short spin on a Saturday to Lowbanks after having visited Elizabeth my sick wife in Fort Erie. I passed many people on bicycles and saw many on motor bikes. Many of them were seniors like me.
When I opened the door of my air conditioned Prius V I felt immediately that finally the summer had returned in full strength.
A larger group of guests just left and I found a place in the shade with a nice view on the lake.
Unfortunately it is still not common in Canada to share is such places a table with other guests. Elizabeth - born and grown up in Fort Erie - loved it to meet strangers when we travelled in Germany. We had great encounters and got even invited in the homes of some people. It is also good for the business of restaurants.
I enjoyed it
I am a grown up beer lover and then I get always something like that. Shame on you!
Whenever Elizabeth is with me she want to sit in the sun and i prefer the shade. Very often one of us has to suffer.
Leider muss man sich auch hier selbst bedienen und sich für das Bier von der Bar nochmals anstellen. Ich habe noch immer Problem mich daran zu gewöhnen.
I am also still not used on the complicated self service. I am handicapped now and all the waiting to be allowed to pay and after that again to pick up your food and the same procedure again to get a beer is disgusting. We need more immigrants from Europe to change that! I never heard any complaints in German from North Americans when they got everything served by a pretty waitress. I had my beer already finished when finally my order for food war ready to be picked up by myself. I did not complain that it was not what I had ordered and I still will gladly come back!
Most people like to be in the shade
Please be polite and order something, certain people take everything as granted
I watched how a couple launched a "Sea-Doo" and departed with high speed.
The I discovered all the funny posters and took pictures of most of them.
The following are a few examples - you are the judge!
Not exactly my taste
Drive along the remaining cost of Lowbanks to see the houses and some cottages. The road has a dead end and you must drive back the short distance.
Ontario has not any longer coal fired power plants. and supported wind power. You can see a few wind turbines here and naturally this caused also some protests. That is not something new. It happened in the past and will happen in the future. Naturally tough regulations are mandatory but I prefer living close to windmills instead close to a nuclear power plant.
The main complaint is the noise. I am now hearing impaired and cannot judge that. However . living in downtown Welland I still get an overdose of noise by reckless drivers of cars and motor bikes and our house is sometimes shaking when heavy trucks hit some of the uneven spots of the road.
Unfortunately the prices of electrical power went through the roof because the same mistakes as in Germany wer done instead of learning from and avoiding them.
Leider wurde auch der Strom recht teuer, da man hier die gleichen Fehler wie in Deutschland gemacht hatte und auch noch weiter macht.
This includes the financial support of battery powered cars which are not even manufactured in our country. Remember when Canada scrapped the Avro project. Now we miss to support the devilment of the fuel cell. To become an extended workbench of large international companies is not a save way in the future. Just watch what thew new US-Führer intends to do! Do we have to follow him? Which chances are left not to suffer und his narrow minded politic? What can we learn from Switzerland?
One of the wind turbines
Some people claim that they sold their houses because of the wind turbines. As you can see many new expensive looking houses have obviously replaced older ones. But that happens everywhere - even in Germany.
Despite the so called heath hazards still cottages find renters in Lowbanks. We loved to make vacations in a cottage but preferred to do this up north with our own private beach and a boat rental. The reason we live very close to Low Banks.
