During the America revolution many Mennonites left Pennsylvania to find a new home in Canada. Many of them settled in the surrounding area of Jordan.
In 1801 they founded the first Mennonite church in Canada.
Visit the Jordan Historical Museum to learn more about the history and how people worked and this time. To show this even a house from one of those settlers was moved to the museum. Another attraction is an old school.
The old school
This school was built in 1859 and was also used for some other educational and social purposes. When a new school was built is was gutted and left empty until it served for storage.
Finally in 1953 it became the local museum. Lots of renovation had to be done to show how it looked in 1908.
Many information are available and the friendly guides are knowledgeable.
If you want to have a family party there ask for details.
The class room
Jacob Fry and his family arrived also at the beginning of the 19th. century in the area around Grimsby. He built this wooden house which he replaced later by a brick house.
Volunteers dismantled the original house in the fifties and restored it here as part of the museum. Lots of artifacts are displayed in it.
Students in historical costumes explain everything and answer questions. I really enjoyed that.
The Fry House
our friendly interpreter was a valuable help by explaining everything and answering questions. He had fun doing it.
Please plan enough time for a visit. Live was not easy at the beginning of the 19th. century and additional sources of income were needed too. Weaving was one of the sources to do that or reduce living expenses.
An old apple press like that one which is on display was used in Ball's Falls during the Thanksgiving celebration. Many visitors including myself tried the fresh pressed natural apple juice and took some of home. You could not store it for a long time because of that.
